How Temperatures and Humidity Affect Carpeting

Today, we’ll be explaining how temperatures and humidity can impact your carpeting.

Carpets come in many styles, and they can promote a cozy atmosphere, which makes them desirable to have around the workplace. A problem with carpets, however, is that the weather outside can take a huge toll on them. It’s important to know how carpets can be affected by the weather so that you know how to take care of them. Today, we’ll be explaining how temperatures and humidity can impact your carpeting.

Reviewing the Impacts of Humidity on Carpeting

Indoor humidity can be a big problem for carpets, as carpets are susceptible to water damage. When indoor conditions are humid enough, it’s possible for mold and mildew to start developing on your carpets. You’ll know if there’s mold when you see dark stains and notice musty stenches. High humidity can also be a problem because carpet fibers absorb moisture, which will ultimately make carpets buckle. Moisture can cause further damage to your carpets because moisture can pull in dirt that’s found deep within your carpet’s fibers. This results in carpet wicking, which means you’ll see recurring stains popping up. You can even have problems when humidity is too low because it results in static buildup, which can bring more dirt to your carpets.

Reviewing the Impacts of Temperature on Carpeting

Extreme temperatures can also be a problem for carpeting. We’re still in the midst of summer right now, and the intense heat can make carpet fibers become weaker and more brittle. High heat also has the issue of trapping odors inside of carpeting, which can worse overall air quality.

On the flipside, intense cold can also be a detriment to carpets. When temperatures get low enough, you can experience latex carpet backings getting stiff and brittle. This will cause seams to start separating, and bubbles will begin to appear. Cold weather can also lower natural ventilation.
